Global Impact of the Coffee Quality Institute (CQI)
The Coffee Quality Institute (CQI) originated from the Specialty Coffee Association of America (SCAA) and now operates independently, aiming to improve the quality of coffee globally. CQI defines premium coffee standards, enhances coffee quality and yield for farmers at origin, and promotes the Q Grader training system, a globally recognized certification that also fosters sustainable industry development.
International Certification System – Coffee Quality Institute
To become a Q Grader (Coffee Quality Grader), candidates must complete a rigorous series of sensory calibration courses and pass an intense series of exams, earning CQI certification. There are approximately 5,000 Q Graders worldwide, and the assessment covers 19 subjects in total: cupping coffees from four continents, conducting triangular tastings, recognizing scents from 36 aroma bottles in four categories, taste tests for acidic, salty, and sweet solutions, organic acid identification, roast level assessment, grading roasted beans, grading green beans, and coffee knowledge exams, among others. Only by passing all tests can one achieve the Q Grader certification!
