咖啡有三大品種

Coffee, botanically classified under the Rubiaceae family's Coffea genus, is an evergreen tree, with coffee beans being the seeds of its fruit. There are three main varieties of coffee: Arabica, Robusta, and Liberica. While specialty coffee predominantly comes from Arabica beans, Robusta is commonly used in commercial coffee or as the primary ingredient in instant coffee, with Liberica being less common. Today, we'll be introducing the rare Liberica coffee variety.

Liberica coffee is characterized by irregularly shaped beans and tall trees, some reaching heights of up to 17 meters, which makes fruit harvesting challenging. Originating from the lowland regions of West Africa, such as Liberia, Ivory Coast, and Madagascar, Liberica coffee is now primarily found in Asian countries like Malaysia, the Philippines, and India. It boasts exceptional resistance to leaf rust disease.

Liberica coffee is renowned for its rarity, accounting for only 2% of the world's total coffee consumption. One of the reasons for its rarity lies in the overall difficulty in harvesting and processing these beans. Arabica coffee comprises approximately 75% of global coffee consumption, while Robusta coffee accounts for around 20%.

Popular as an alternative to Arabica and Robusta coffee, Liberica coffee has the lowest caffeine content among the three main coffee varieties. Liberica coffee beans contain only 1.23 grams of caffeine per 100 grams of coffee beans, compared to 2.26 grams for Robusta and 1.61 grams for Arabica.

It features large leaves and coffee cherries, also known as large-fruited coffee. The ratio of pulp to bean in Liberica coffee beans is approximately 6:4, whereas it's 4:6 for Arabica and Robusta beans. This not only prolongs the drying time for Liberica pulp but also affects its flavor profile. With more pulp, Liberica undergoes a longer natural fermentation period, allowing its fruity aroma to develop.
