Rwanda, a small landlocked country in East Africa, is known as the "Land of a Thousand Hills" due to its mountainous and plateau terrain. This hilly environment, combined with fertile soil, excellent climate, and ample rainfall, creates an ideal coffee-growing environment, resulting in coffees with rich and complex flavors.

Around 2010, Rwanda became the first African country to host the Cup of Excellence. Due to its limited coffee cultivation area, Rwanda shifted its focus to specialty coffee production, excelling in the "fully washed" processing method. Rwandan washed coffees are known for their high-quality control (an average of 10 liters of water is used to wash 1 kilogram of coffee cherries), clean and appealing green beans, and pure flavors. These coffees are considered rising stars in the Specialty Coffee Association's (SCA) definition of "specialty coffee," with flavors comparable to those of renowned African regions like Yirgacheffe and Kenya.
