"Costa Rica's coffee industry began developing very early. In 1820, coffee was shipped to Colombia and Chile. In 1845, with the assistance of the captain of the British merchant ship 'Monarch,' one hundred pounds of coffee were transported to London, earning it the title of 'Golden Bean from Costa Rica' by British aristocrats. Gradually, coffee became Costa Rica's main economic crop, and coffee farmers hold a very high status in the country.
Costa Rica has seven major coffee-growing regions, with those on the Pacific slope generally producing better quality coffee than those on the Atlantic side. Some of the well-known regions include the Central Valley, Tarrazú, and Tres Ríos. Costa Rican coffee has excellent balance, and compared to the sharpness of Guatemalan coffee, it is much gentler and smoother, with notes of acidity, sweetness, and chocolate bitterness, representing a classic flavor of premium coffee. The flavor of Costa Rican coffee varies depending on the altitude. Higher altitude mountain areas have stronger acidity and distinct body, while lower altitudes yield smoother flavors."
