CQI Q Grader is the most rigorous coffee sensory testing system in the world. After finally obtaining the certificate, it has to be calibrated regularly! If you don’t pass the calibration, you will be disqualified. It’s very strict in order to encourage coffee cuppers to use international standards to professionally distinguish the quality of coffee. CQI (Coffee Quality Institute) originated from SCAA and now operates independently. It improves the quality of high-quality coffee around the world, from defining high-quality coffee standards, optimizing the production quality and quantity of farmers in origin, and promoting the training system of coffee quality graders. It is not only an international indicator, but also the enhancement of the sustainable development of the industry.
How can one become a certified Q Grader?
Q Grader (coffee quality appraiser) can obtain CQI certification after a series of sensory course calibrations and high-intensity tests. There are about 10,000 Q Graders in the world. A total of 19 test subjects: cupping coffee from 4 continents, triangular cupping for coffee from 4 continents, olfactory identification of 36 bottles divided into 4 groups, taste test of acidity, salty and sweet liquid, organic acid identification, roasting degree identification, roasted beans grading, green bean grading and coffee basics quiz. You must pass all of them to get the Q Grader!
The senses need to be calibrated regularly so that the judgment of the senses will not be affected by time. What is sensory calibration? When sharing coffee with friends, Mr. A said that it has a tropical fruit flavor, Mr. B said that it has a pineapple flavor, and Mr. C said that it has a berry flavor. At this time, the three friends are correcting each other’s senses. The Q Grader's calibration method is very complicated. To digitize the evaluation of flavor and other factors, it must be calibrated with international examiners. The difference between the scores for each item cannot exceed 0.25 points.
