Coffee originated in Ethiopia, spread to Yemen, and was introduced to India in the 17th century. At that time, Baba Budan returned from a pilgrimage to Mecca with seven coffee beans, planting them in the mountains of Chikkamagaluru, India, now known as Baba Budan Giri. Coffee cultivation developed slowly in India, with the British establishing the first formal plantations in the same region in 1840.
Over the years, repeated struggles with coffee leaf rust and an emphasis on yield led India to increase its Robusta cultivation and prioritize shade-grown conditions. Today, India's Robusta coffee production is more than double that of Arabica, with almost all coffee grown under shade, much of it in forest-like conditions. In recent years, Indian specialty coffee farmers have been seeking coffees suitable for the specialty market. India is poised to attract increasing attention from specialty markets, not only because of its rapidly improving quality. Due to its forest-like conditions, Indian coffee plantations are home to a rich variety of wildlife, including tigers and elephants. Compared to shade-grown coffee in other parts of the world, Indian coffee is grown under dense shade conditions.
